Being organised is one of those traits that you either have or you don’t. Some people find it very easy to put things in their place and then remember to put them back and some people…….don’t. We all know someone like this!
I love organising things. I don’t see mess, I see a challenge and my brain goes to work finding patterns and throwing ideas around for the best way to clear it all up. But that’s just me. For the less inclined here are my top tips to get you going!
- Break it down.
When you see a big mess, you can start to panic and wonder how it’s all going to get done. Take a breath, break it down and go step by step. Find a small pile and work through that before you move on to the next thing. It’s not a big job, it’s lot of little jobs.
- Finish one thing before you move on.
Try not to move on before you’ve finished. It can be really easy to start one thing and then when it’s only half done, move on and start another but what usually happens is you end up with a bigger mess because you can’t remember what goes in which pile or where you even started!
- Have a plan.
It can be really tempting to look at the mess and just dive in without any thought of what you’re doing but try and work out a plan before you start. If it’s paperwork, make piles for each different item and have a file or folder ready to put them in. If it’s something like kitchen items, have an idea of what you’re going to put in each cupboard so you’re not just throwing things in randomly. A little bit of preparation can save you time later.
- Write things down.
If it’s your life that’s a bit disorganised, then the best thing you can do is write things down. Use a diary if you like pen and paper or use your phone. Every smart phone these days has a calendar on that you can set to give you reminders of appointments or even just tasks that you need to do. I use both and credit them with keeping me sane otherwise I’d never know where I was at. Life can be a bit chaotic, so a little prompt can go a long way!
- Organised Chaos!
Speaking of chaos, there is such a thing as organised chaos and that’s ok. To the outsider it may look like a mess but if YOU know where everything is or what you’re doing then that’s all that matters.
- Don’t panic.
Do not panic!! I know I already said it but it’s an important one. When you’re faced with a daunting task you can easily become overwhelmed and either panic or walk away and leave it and neither of those are helpful really. Have a moment to think and then get stuck in.
- Get some help!
If it’s all getting a bit much, then get some help in. We can’t all be good at everything and sometimes you just need a helping hand.
